Caris Leadership Development Institute: Our Commitment to Compliance
Caris Healthcare is guided by our values in pursuit of a
world-class level of quality care. Our values are an acronym of our name: Compassion, Accountability, Respect,
Integrity and Service. While integrity is listed third because of how Caris is
spelled, it is the most important value in defining who we are and what we do.
Caris is strongly committed to compliance and integrity.
Each year Caris invites a representative from Palmetto GBA, a
contractor for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) that
oversees Caris participation in the Medicare and Medicaid programs, to speak at
our annual Clinical Leadership Development Institute.
For our July 2016 Leadership Development Institute, Caris
Corporate Compliance Officer Sylvia Singleton invited Provider Education
Consultant Charles Canaan, RN, to speak on behalf of Palmetto GBA. “I always
like to bring someone to speak on hospice criteria and the new and changing
rules and regulations that govern our compliance with Medicare,” Ms. Singleton
said. “Charles brought us information on Medicare and the ever-changing world
of hospice. Having Charles at the Caris Leadership Development Institute keeps
us current on Medicare changes and medical review activities and provides us
information on how we compare to other providers billing to Palmetto GBA.”
In his presentation, Mr. Canaan’s discussed a variety of
case scenarios to illustrate appropriate documentation to support a terminal
prognosis. Mr. Canaan also conducted a Q&A session, during which Caris
clinicians dug deeper into policies, compliance and best practices.
“Caris understands that the best way to remain compliant is
by upholding integrity and consistently educating ourselves on rules and
regulations,” stated Founder and CEO Norman McRae.
“We are always happy to see a presentation by Mr. Canaan,”
Mrs. Singleton added.
